Presbyopia: Are You Reading at Arms Length?

Presbyopia

Do you find yourself having to hold the menu further away to read it? Are you struggling to read messages on your mobile phone or the small print on grocery labels? If you are, you’re not alone. Many of our patients are too suffering from the effects of presbyopia.

These are common first signs of presbyopia, the normal loss of near focusing ability that occurs with age. Unfortunately, we can’t escape this, and most of us will start to notice this change in our early to mid-forties. The good news is that we can help correct presbyopia very simply with glasses or contact lenses in the prescription you need. Through an eye examination we can help tackle the no. 1 symptom associated with presbyopia – the need to extend your arm to read the small print.

Presboypia

What causes presbyopia?

When you’re young, the lens in your eye is flexible and relatively elastic. It can change its length or shape with the help of a ring of tiny muscles that surround it. However, as we age, the lens in the eye gradually thickens and loses elasticity. As a result, light focuses behind the retina instead of directly on it, compromising our ability to focus on close objects. With an estimated 1.8 billion[1] people with presbyopia, we are dedicated to providing service to all those on the Northern Beaches who might be suffering.

What are the signs that I am developing presbyopia?

  • Blurred and Cloudy vision
  • Difficulty reading small print
  • Difficulty focusing on near objects
  • Need to hold objects further away to see them properly
  • Difficulty reading in dark conditions
  • Headaches occurring after reading
  • Eye strain

In response Beckenham Optometrist is launching a community campaign educating on the realities of Presbyopia. With common side effects including eyestrain, headaches and fatigue after reading close work or struggling with reading small print; we can help find you a simple solution to ease the strain.
