Following on from work in rural and remote Indigenous communities in Australia, Rowena is an active member of the Sumba Eye Program. She travels to Sumba, Indonesia, twice annually to perform essential optometric services and help build the capacity of the local health staff.
Approximately 750 patients are screened on each visit, with 1000 pairs of spectacles delivered and 90 to 100 patients receiving sight restoring surgery, improving their function and mobility and enabling them to return to productive work in the family and community.

Sustainable practices don’t have to negatively impact product quality or patient care – in fact they do the opposite. Optical fast fashion is a by-product of two-for-one and cheaper disposable manufacturing. At Beckenham Optometrist we provide our community with the best eyewear for both our patients and the environment.
We recycle, reuse and refill our packaging, cleaning sprays, and old spectacle cases. We donate patients’ old specs to Lions Club and facilitate the recycling of disposable contact lenses and blister packs, through Opticycle.
We partner with Aussie frame brands who hold sustainable credentials. Good Citizens, a local Northern Beaches company, make glasses with 100% recycled plastic bottles. Otis, heralding from WA, is B CORP certified, making frames from eco-acetate which is also recyclable, biodegradable, and eco-friendly. Other frame brands who use similar eco-acetate are Garrett Leight, Van Staveren, Eyes Right Optical, Bill Bass, and Dirty Dog.
